RE OVERVIEW Years 1 to 6

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

INTENT

The aim of religious education at Rose Lane Primary is to promote the spiritual, moral, social, emotional, cultural and intellectual development of pupils and of society. Encouraging an exploration of and response to those aspects of religion and human experience which raise fundamental questions of belief and value. RE brings together the processes of learning about and expressing and deploying skills around the study of religion and world views. We encourage pupils to make links between their learning about and their own personal experiences through identity and belonging, meaning, purpose and truth and values and commitments. We enable pupils to develop their thinking about their own and others’ experiences so that they develop in their thinking about their own experiences in life, as they compare their experiences with those of others.

IMPLEMENTATION

Our lessons come from the Barking and Dagenham agreed syllabus. In EYFS it reflects the key concerns of children of this key stage, as formalised in the early learning goals and EYFS framework. RE-related activities therefore focus on three themes:

• Celebrating Special Times; • Stories and What They Tell Us; and • Aspects of Identity and Relationships

In KS1 and 2, each of the RE units for this key stage develops a theme, which draws from a range of religious material and focusses on big questions. Pupils are expected to engage in discussion of these questions using religious and technical vocabulary with confidence. They will learn about the major world faiths: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Buddhism as well as world views such as Humanism. Through our lessons pupils are prepared for life in modern Britain by providing opportunities to explore issues of identity and belonging, encouraging the investigation of a range of lifestyles and ways of thinking in order to understand themselves and others better; encouraging reflection on their own and others’ beliefs, values and lifestyles and, with sensitivity, to develop understanding of beliefs; providing opportunities for the challenge of unhelpful stereotypes and the promotion of key values such as ‘respect for all’; fostering personal engagement with, and a sense of responsibility for, the development of a diverse, understanding and equitable society.

The children are provided with opportunities for first hand cultural and religious experiences, in the form of visitors from and visits to places of worship.

IMPACT

The impact of our RE curriculum is that pupils demonstrate

  • an awareness of their own developing views and perceptions;
  • a curiosity about the world of other people and an active interest in how they communicate their beliefs and values;
  • a willingness to respect the values and beliefs of others;
  • a willingness to take part in the human search for truth, purpose and meaning; and
  • a fascination with how people respond to those deep questions which affect the way in which they approach and influence their lives, and
  • appreciation, awe and wonder
