MUSIC OVERVIEW Years 1 to 6

MUSIC

INTENT

“Music has a power of forming the character and should therefore be introduced into the education of the young.” -Aristotle

It is our intention that pupils will leave Rose Lane Primary with a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing. Our objective is that our pupils will develop a sense of curiosity for the subject as well as an understanding about the importance of music and leave Rose Lane Primary with a repertoire of songs they have learnt in different styles and from different cultures.

Learning is sequenced through a range of topics using the structure of ‘Charanga’ which is informed by the National Curriculum. This varied programme will allow pupils to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to improve on. As musicians, pupils will learn to express their own opinions demonstrating individual liberty. They will also learn mutual respect and tolerance through learning about music from different cultures.

“Children from all backgrounds and every part of England should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument; to make music with others; to learn to sing; and to have the opportunity to progress to the next level of excellence if they wish to.” - Department for Education. We as a school whole heartedly embrace this statement and will strive to give every child a rich and fulfilling music journey during their time with us. IMPLEMENTATION

Our scheme of work is based on materials from the Charanga scheme. Pupils cover skills such as pulse, rhythm, pitch and tempo, they progress from exploring non-pitched instruments, through pitched percussion to play the recorder in Y 3 and 4 and the ukele in Y 5 and 6. Our scheme provides many examples of music styles and genres from different times and places. These are explored through the language of music via active listening, performing and composing activities, which enable understanding of the context and genre. These genres and themes link as much as possible to the topic being studied and children use music as a way of evidencing their learning e.g. writing song lyrics about the local area as part of a local history study, to the tune of Dancing in the Streets when studying Motown as a musical genre. All children are given the opportunity to perform to their peers and families during their time at Rose Lane Primary School at various points throughout the year, these include concerts, assemblies and our awards ceremony. Class assemblies for parents and other community presentations allow the children to understand the importance of preparing for performance and promotes self-confidence and sense of achievement. Children also have the opportunity to extend their musical activity by joining the various after school clubs we offer.

IMPACT

Whilst in school, children have access to a varied programme, which allows students to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to improve upon. The integral nature of music and the learner creates an enormously rich palette from which a student may access fundamental abilities such as: achievement, self-confidence, interaction with and awareness of others, and self-reflection. Music will also develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to students individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world. Children are able to enjoy music, in as many ways as they choose- either as listener, creator or performer. They can dissect music and comprehend its parts, they can sing and feel a pulse.
