ART

INTENT

At Rose Lane Primary School, we believe that art provides pupils with a broad range of opportunities in which they can share and express their individual creativity, whilst learning about and making links with the different types of art in our society. Art stimulates creativity and imagination. It allows children to have a variety of visual and sensory experiences and provides ways of understanding and responding to the world. Art and enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

It is our intention that children will leave our school with their personal development being enhanced in creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection. They will also leave with a natural sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them which links strongly to our school values. The focus is in developing proficiency in drawing, painting, understanding colour and shade and sculpture, with the overall aim of developing a rigorous understanding, critical awareness and inspiration of art and design. The children’s cultural development will be enhanced and by giving them this opportunity to learn and enjoy the arts and culture from a young age will positively impact their future careers as well as enriching their childhood.

IMPLEMENTATION

  • Art is taught regularly through lessons linked to our humanities topics alongside additional opportunities to engage with art and design activities throughout the school year.
  • Children engage in drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles and printing.
  • These skills are revisited and honed in a spiral curriculum, which progresses in terms of depth and challenge, to build on the children’s previous learning. The progression of skills is detailed in our scheme of work
  • An enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers is fostered both through our scheme of work and special events such as Future Selves week
  • We utilise a sketchbook approach, so that children feel safe to experiment and take risks, without the fear of doing something “wrong”.
  • We encourage each child to evaluate their art and design work and that of others, both with peers and adults.
  • We celebrate effort, progress and achievement in art through display and the work of our pupil art ambassadors

IMPACT

  • Determining the extent to which objectives are met within each lesson and overall, at the end of each unit.
  •  Images of the children’s practical learning.
  • Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
  • Moderation staff meetings where pupil’s books are scrutinised and there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers to understand their class’s work.
